Best Cover Art 2012 - Frank De Backer & Wally De Backer - Making Mirrors - Gotye
Every year the ARIA awards introduce growing numbers of alternative music fans to what is happening in Australian mainstream music.
With the distribution and circulation of music increasingly in the hands of independent music producers rather than industry professionals, the authority of traditional judging institutions comes under intensified scrutiny. Music fans are interested to know what determines status and value according to the ARIA judging academy, especially when prestigious awards are only open to ARIA members. In 2010, the ARIAs introduced public voting in four categories: Most Popular Australian Album, Most Popular Australian Artist, Most Popular Australian Single and Most Popular International Artist. Online voting is conducted here
This year’s ARIA nominations honour both emerging and established talent. While popular figures such as Guy Sebastian and Delta Goodrem are among those who compete for Song of the Year, there is also a marked emphasis on Australian hip hop, with Melbourne rapper 360 up for six awards including Best Australian Live Act, and the Hilltop Hoods nominated for Best Group.
The contenders for Album of the Year are 360's Falling & Flying
, Gotye's Making Mirrors
, Missy Higgins' The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle
, The Jezabels' Prisoner
and The Temper Trap's The Temper Trap
. Best Female Artist nominations are Jessica Mauboy, Kimbra, Lanie Lane, Missy Higgins and Washington, while Best Male Artist nominations go to 360, Angus Stone, Gotye, Guy Sebastian, Keith Urban and Matt Corby.
360 and The Jezabels also join a confirmed list of performers which includes The Temper Trap, Hilltop Hoods and Jessica Mauboy. The ARIAS are announced on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Darling Harbour. Some tickets are available to the public, including the potential to view red carpet arrivals.
